Foraging Update June 2020

Let it be said... Coronavirus has impacted every aspect of tourism right around the world and the Oberon mushroom foraging season was not immune.

Not that this worried the mushrooms, or the forests. Mushrooms were growing everywhere and it was shaping up to be one of the best seasons ever.  But with the falling temperatures that come in May and June, the season has now finished.

You can see a short video summary of our foraging tours by looking at the Oberon Visitor Information Centre Facebook page or YouTube channel.

Send us a message if you would like to be kept in touch for Foraging 2021.

Thanks everyone,

Ian

Mushroom Foraging Adventures 2020

The final plans are now in place for Mushroom Foraging Oberon 2020. It's beginning to look like a great foraging season (March - April).

Foraging Update  30th March 2020

All foraging tours have been cancelled in line with Govt policy on gatherings. This is disappointing but a practical solution to a growing problem relating to Coronavirus.

Please... stay in touch. Let me know if you'd like to be kept on an email list should this all settle down or you would like to plan for Foraging 2021. Thanks everyone, Ian

More Choices in Mushroom Foraging Adventures 2020

We are running more days and with greater flexibility.

2 hour Mid week tours - Departing 8:30am and 1pm (Wednesday)

This is our traditional 2 hour foraging expedition, same as the 2019 season

3 hour Weekend tours - Departing 8am and 1pm (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday)

This is an extended tour including a mushroom cook-up in the forest (subject to availability and weather). We trialed this concept in 2019 with great success and now, it's a choice you can experience yourself. There is nothing quite like the smell of sizzling mushrooms, garlic and oils amidst the pine trees on a quite forest track. You'll love it.

4WD Foraging Adventure

This special 4WD Foraging adventure is a great experience for those wanting to get out and about, deep in the pine forests of Oberon. Departing from Oberon Visitors Information Centre carpark, seats are strictly limited so please book early.

Please note the Oberon Visitor Centre will be closed during April and is only being used as a convenient departure point for our foraging tours.

You’ll be treated to a great 4WD adventure to some of the more remote areas of the forests, where identification and forging are at its best. See and learn about the area, enjoy the comfort of a luxury 4WD and have fun.

Forage, collect or simply photograph mushrooms in the wild. Take in all the sensations of the pine forests; the sights, the rich pine smell and the atmosphere.

Join us on a 4WD adventure that you'll talk about for years to come.

Please Note

  • This is a 4WD foraging adventure for up to 7 Guests. Not suitable for children under 5 years of age
  • It is advisable for Guests to bring a jacket, hat, sunscreen, water, wear enclosed shoes and bring any personal necessities
  • Ideal mushrooming equipment you' will need to bring is a small knife suitable for cutting mushrooms, gloves. A small box such as a beer or wine box cut in half is ideal. Mushrooms can breathe and are not squashed.
  • Don't forget to bring your camera
  • Foraging is an individual pursuit and while your Guide will be there to assist and give you guidance on foraging procedures and how to avoid collecting the wrong ones, you are solely responsible for the mushroom collecting yourself. We recommend you visit the NSW Forestry Corporation website for further details on the collection of edible mushrooms.
  • The tour will proceed if it is raining (which is good for mushroom growth), so please come prepared for wet weather which can occur from time to time in the mountain environment.
Once you book on-line with our reservation system your seat will be confirmed within a day.

Tour Highlights

  • Pine Forest foraging, 4WDing and a beautiful country drive
  • Possible sightings of Kangaroos, Wallabies, Echidna, white and black Cockatoos, Possums
  • Beautiful natural Australian flora and fauna

Important points to remember

1) We meet at the Oberon Visitors Visitors Information Centre carpark, 48 Ross St Oberon. Please bring your booking confirmation with you on the day.

Traffic delays can be experienced on the mountain roads from Sydney, especially on weekends and the tour cannot delay departure waiting for late arrivals. We are not able to offer refunds if you do not make the departure time on the day.

3) The Oberon Visitor Information Centre will be closed during April and will not be able to assist with foraging information or bathrooms prior to the tour commencing.
