Historical Hill End & History Hill Museum

From AUD $120.00
  • Duration: 7 Hours (approx.)
  • Location: Bathurst, NSW
  • Product code: PRSADH

Originally settled in the 1850’s, Hill End was a gold town
from the beginning.

It is said, the traditional Aboriginal owners of the land showed the European settlers the yellow rock on the ground, sparking the interest in gold and the formation of the town originally called Bald Hill.

But it was a gold strike, in the early hours of 19th
October 1872 that put this little Australian town on the map. The world’s
largest gold nugget (specimen) was found in the Star of Hope mine. Weighing in
at 286kg, the Beyers-Holtermann nugget once crushed produced over 80kg of pure gold and created a gold rush never before seen.

Arriving in Hill End, we visit
the History Hill Museum. You may be lucky to hear from the owner himself; Malcolm Drinkwater
in his welcome chat; see the actual tip off the Beyers-Holtermann nugget and marvel
over hundreds of rare gold related artefacts. Visiting this museum will take
you back in time. You will never forget the quirky Malcolm Drinkwater and his
lifetime collection that is History Hill Museum.

Lunch is at leisure in Hill End (we can arrange a group
lunch for 10 or more) followed by an afternoon of wandering around the old

Enjoy a counter lunch and beer in the Royal Hotel (built 1872), or a
coffee and sandwich in the General store.

You can relax in the bus for a tour of
the town including a visit to a beautiful lookout to see where the world’s
largest nugget was actually found.
